Soma Nomaoi boasts a history of over 1,000 years. On the first day's eve festival, events include the departure ceremony, welcoming of the supreme commander, night riding, and war council. On the second day's main festival, a procession of over 500 riders is followed by the spectacular armor horse race where mounted warriors thunder past like the wind. In the divine flag battle, hundreds of mounted warriors scramble for the sacred flags as if in actual battle. On the third day, the sacred ritual 'Nomakake' is performed, in which horses deemed worthy by the gods are captured and offered, bringing the three-day Soma Nomaoi festival to a close.
