Kyokusui-no-En is an elegant banquet where a sake cup is floated downstream, and participants must compose a waka poem before the cup passes them, then pick up the cup and drink. In ancient Japan, it was believed that disease would spread when flower petals fell. Meanwhile, peach blossoms were thought to have the power to ward off disease. The 'Kyokusui-no-En' is said to have originated in the practice of going to the waterside on the first Day of the Snake in the third lunar month, when peach blossoms bloom, purifying oneself in the stream water, drinking sake, and quelling disease. Enjoy this rare spring banquet, held just once a year.
