Meishoji-zakura is a new species of cherry discovered in 1965 by botanist Shigeichi Yagi on the hillside of Meishoji Temple. Although there are over 300 species of cherry, this was a completely new type, and in April 1977 it was designated as a city natural monument. It features beautiful single white flowers with a strong fragrance.
