Once every 12 years on the Horse Year, April 15 and 16, the grand Shikinen Shinko Festival is held at Katori Shrine. On the 15th, about 3,000 attendants form a grand procession from Katori Shrine, board sacred boats at the Tsumiya Torii riverside on the Tone River, travel upstream, and join with the reception boats from Kashima Shrine offshore from Sawara for the Omukae Ceremony. On the 16th, they return through the center of Sawara back to Katori Shrine. On land and water, many parishioners participate in this grand historical pageant.
