This unusual festival traces its origins to the early Edo period, when a long drought ended after rain-prayer rituals succeeded, and people celebrated by ringing the bell of Kaminichidera Temple. Ever since, strong young men have repeatedly struck the hanging bell using a long pine log, giving birth to the name 'Gon-Gon Festival.' The grand finale 'Gon-Gon Bell Ringing Contest' challenges participants to carry a pine log and ring the bell as many times as possible in one minute.
