The 'furin' (wind chime) has its origins in 'futaku,' a small bell-like object hung under the eaves of temples in ancient China, believed to ward off evil. It came to Japan with Buddhism, and when Heian aristocrats began hanging them at their homes, this gave rise to the modern wind chime. Wind chimes are, in a sense, Buddhist implements, making them perfectly suited for temple events. Wind chimes are hung throughout the precinct for the 'Wind Chime Festival.' May the pleasant sound dispel summer heat, ward off evil spirits, drive away pestilence, and convey wishes to Yakushi-sama.
