A grand festival dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, held on the Sunday before April 25 (the anniversary of his death), with an eve festival the day before. A tradition that has continued since Meiji 6, with some interruptions due to war and other circumstances. The day features a dedicated kendo tournament and various events, but the main highlight is a daimyo procession reenacting the feudal lord's sankin-kotai march through the city. The white-walled townscape transforms to feel like a time slip back to the Edo period.
