Around Gifu Park and the Nagaragawa Embankment, there are 400 cherry trees including Somei Yoshino, mountain cherry, and Edo Higan stretching about 1 km. Every year in early April, the riverside to the Gifu Park Japan-China Friendship Garden area is filled with cherry blossoms in full bloom, bustling with many flower viewers day and night. The Ukai Sakura in the grounds of Gifu Gokoku Shrine is an Edo Higan cherry tree said to be 100 years old, a large tree with about 2.5m trunk circumference and 8m height. An early-blooming cherry, it announces the arrival of spring earliest every year.
