As the long winter ends and the spring equinox begins, three lions (shishi) perform ancient dances to the sound of flutes and drums while touring the city—the 'Aizu Higan Shishi'. A traditional Aizu event praying for a bountiful harvest and family safety while celebrating the arrival of spring together. The dances are performed at Tsuruga Castle, Amidaji Temple, and other locations throughout the city.
