A winter tradition of Mt. Akagi, the symbol of Maebashi City. Ice fishing for smelt involves drilling a hole in the thick ice of Akagi Onuma and dropping a fishing line. Rental equipment is plentiful, and shop staff and regulars will kindly teach you, so beginners can feel at ease. The smelt of Mt. Akagi is reputed to be delicious, and you can have it made into tempura at the shop. Smelt you catch yourself is exceptional. This winter, take about an hour from the city center to experience the world of snow and ice, "Mt. Akagi".
