The Yayoi Festival, the main festival of Nikko Futaarasan Shrine, has long been called the 'Gota Festival,' a festival that respects old customs and proceeds with strict formality. At the Yayoi Festival, floats are called 'yatai' (家体), and 11 'hana-yatai' (flower floats) decorated with artificial Yashio Azalea flowers in spring colors are paraded out, colorfully announcing the arrival of spring in Nikko. One of the highlights is the sight of many people working together to pull the yatai up the planked steps of the approach all at once.
