Goro Umezu was born in Asadachi, Shirataka Town, Yamagata Prefecture. He mainly exhibited at the Toko Exhibition and Nitten, and in 1956 (Showa 31) at the 12th Nitten he won a special prize for "Kitchen," depicting the kitchen of the Chinese restaurant where he worked, and his unique sense of everyday life was praised. In his later years, he donated more than 120 works, including representative pieces, to his hometown Shirataka Town. In 2022, 117 additional works were donated to Shirataka Town by his bereaved family. Goro Umezu Painting Exhibition: From the Atelier in Shimo-Ochiai.
