Lupine is a leguminous plant native to South America and the Mediterranean, blooming in a rich variety of colors including pink, orange, white, yellow, and blue. Because its flowers bloom skyward like an upside-down wisteria, it is called 'Nobori Fuji' (climbing wisteria) in Japan. Although naturally a perennial, it cannot survive the summer heat on Honshu, so new seedlings are planted every year. The approximately 30,000 lupines here make this one of the largest displays in Japan.
