The earliest blooming cherry blossom in Kyoto Gyoen is the weeping cherry at the Konoe Residence Ruins. Located in the northwest part of Gyoen, this site is the former residence of the Konoe family, one of the five regent families, who produced regents and chief advisors to the emperor, with about 60 weeping cherry trees planted. They begin to open in mid-March, and as the timing differs by variety—white, red, etc.—they can be enjoyed overall for about a month.
