This is the site where the monk Saigyo, on his pilgrimage across the provinces, is said to have engaged in a Zen dialogue with a young boy he met beneath a great pine tree — and lost — leading him to abandon his journey to Matsushima. The park is also celebrated as a cherry blossom spot; from its observation deck, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking view uniquely combining cherry blossoms and the scenery of Matsushima Bay. The Somei Yoshino within the park bloom from mid to late April, and the contrast of pink blossoms, blue sea, and green pines is magnificent.
