Symplocarpus foetidus is a perennial plant similar to skunk cabbage that grows in wetlands in the mountains, and from January to February, before the leaves, flowers wrapped in a 10-20 cm spathe appear. The flower shape is likened to a monk practicing zazen, so it is called Symplocarpus foetidus. It is designated as a natural monument of Otawara City, and the 'Symplocarpus foetidus Colony' in Kitakanemaru is a wetland (about 1,400 square meters) surrounded by coppice forests and rice paddies, where many Symplocarpus foetidus grow wild.
