A tea ceremony originating in the Kamakura period, when the monk Eison offered tea to Hachimansha Shrine in gratitude for the restoration of Saidaiji, then served the remaining tea to the people. Combining two meanings — replacing sake with tea as practice of the precept against drinking, and providing tea (then considered a valuable medicine) to the people as part of social welfare — this tradition has been passed down for nearly 800 years. Today, monks prepare tea in large tea bowls over 30 cm in diameter and serve it to participants.
