The bank of the Mitoya River flowing along National Route 54, alongside the Hii River Embankment Cherry Tree Avenue, is a famous cherry blossom spot in Unnan City. About 800 cherry trees bloom in full glory over about 2 kilometers. Two weeks after Yoshino cherries bloom, from mid to late April, the yellow-green cherry 'Gyoiko' reaches full bloom. Said to be named after its fresh and elegant color reminiscent of nobles' clothing, it is famous as a rare cherry nationally. In Unnan City, 'Sakuramori' (cherry guardians) - specialists in cherry tree care - are stationed to protect old trees over 80 years old and develop new ones. They are also working on cherry town development together with citizens.
