With the sound of drums, a Shinto ritual is performed as the sacred object is transferred to the mikoshi portable shrine. To the chant of "Chosa ja, Chosa ja," the mikoshi is carried swiftly down the stone steps and paraded vigorously through the crowd filling the plaza. The mikoshi is submerged in the sea two or three times, drenched in the spray of the Kuroshio current, then carried ashore to the Uraiwa Otabisho on the east coast. A Shinto prayer is offered, and all islanders — young and old — pass under the mikoshi.
