Originally planted around Takamatsu Pond to commemorate Japan's victory in the Russo-Japanese War, approximately 1,300 cherry trees including Somei-yoshino and weeping cherry are the foundation of this park, which was selected among the '100 Best Cherry Blossom Viewing Spots in Japan' in 1989. The Morioka Cherry Blossom Festival is held to coincide with the typical April bloom, with cherry tree illuminations planned for part of the park (please check the official website for details).
