This special exhibition of lacquerware features maki-e sake cups with underdrawings by Sakai Hoitsu and produced by Hara Yosai, as well as maki-e furnishings owned by the former imperial family, a carved red lacquer ornament stand that was a relic of Emperor Taisho, and bowls and cups from the Shimazu family of Satsuma Domain. Additionally, a maki-e mulberry chest with ivory doors, said to have belonged to a daughter of Emperor Meiji and appraised at a high value on a certain TV program, is a collaborative work by Shibata Zeshin and Hasegawa Mitsuyoshi and can be viewed simultaneously in the permanent exhibition.
