Located in the city center, Kunohe Castle Ruins was built by Mitsumasa four generations before Kunohe Masazane, and became the site of the final battle in Toyotomi Hideyoshi's campaign to unify Japan. The ruins contain what are believed to be the oldest stone wall remains in Tohoku, designated as a National Historic Site in 1935. In spring, approximately 40 cherry trees throughout the grounds burst into bloom, making it one of the finest cherry blossom spots in the city.
