The place name 'Kassemba' is a common name, used since long ago for the high ground area on either side of National Route 459. It is said to be the place where the warrior Minamoto no Yoshiie (Hachimantaro) of the mid-Heian period fought with the Abe Sadato/Munetō brothers. On May 1, 1987 (Showa 62), when it was designated as a natural monument by the former Iwashiro Town Board of Education, it was named 'Kassenba no Shidare-zakura'. There are 2 Kassemba weeping cherry trees, but more than 200 surrounding cherry trees are commonly called the 'Iwashiro Sakura Kairo' (Iwashiro Cherry Blossom Corridor) (currently undergoing treatment to restore tree vigor).
