Hojuin is the west tower of Heishaji, a large temple that flourished here from the Heian to Kamakura periods. Weeping cherry, Somei Yoshino, and higan cherry trees are planted on the temple grounds. The highlight is a magnificent weeping cherry tree said to have been planted by Muso Kokushi, about 200 years old. Although it is an old tree, its drooping pink blossoms resemble fireworks in the summer night sky.
