Rokkakudo, known as the head temple of the Ikenobo school of flower arrangement, is famous for its weeping cherry tree called 'Miyuki-zakura'. The flowers start as a pale pink close to white and gradually change to deep pink as they bloom. In 996, Emperor Kazan's visit to Rokkakudo led to the start of the Saigoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage, and the name derives from a poem composed by Kazanin Saki no Naidaijin upon seeing the cherry blossoms at Rokkakudo: 'Since it is the law at the beginning of spring to pray for the world, after your visit there must be traces.' The Miyuki-zakura at Rokkakudo is an early-blooming cherry that announces the beginning of spring in Kyoto earlier than most.
