In the Anjo City area during the Edo Period, there were about 39 farming villages. Amid complex and overlapping rule by feudal lords, villagers managed their villages through self-governance. However, they faced many difficulties such as orders from lords, floods, incidents within the village, and conflicts with neighboring villages. The wish for peace was embodied in the night lights inscribed with 'Village Safety.' Though rural villages appeared closed, people and culture actually flowed in and out, and villagers sought richer lives through migrant work and trade. This exhibition introduces aspects of village life through old documents and picture maps.
