The Hina Matsuri in Yachi, Kahoku Town, Yamagata Prefecture is held in April, one month later than the traditional date. Along Hina-ichi Street, the "Hina-ichi" market is set up with many stalls. The many hina dolls still remaining in old family homes in the town tell of the prosperity brought by the safflower trade. Elegant period hina dolls such as Kyoho hina, Jirozaemon hina, and Gosho dolls, passed down through generations in each household, are open to the public. A kimekomi doll-making experience is also held with an instructor invited from Iwatsuki, Saitama City. Apply to the Kahoku Town Tourism and Products Association. (Until 3/28)
