The Yakushi Festival Plant Market is considered one of Japan's three major plant markets, alongside those in Kumamoto and Osaka. It is said to have begun when Yamagata castle lord Mogami Yoshiaki called on residents to restore greenery to the town after a great fire, making it a historic event continuing for over 400 years.
