Shoji Ueda's photo collection "Matsue" was published in 1978 (Showa 53) along with an essay by essayist Taneichiro Kanto. Since the 1960s, Ueda had been actively photographing Matsue itself as his subject, capturing the expressions of this city known as the "City of Water" throughout the four seasons and the simple lives of the people who live there.
