The monk Kakujo, the restorer of Toshodai-ji Temple during the Kamakura period, was bitten by a mosquito during practice. When a disciple tried to swat it, Kakujo said: 'Giving one's blood is also a bodhisattva's act.' To honor his pure virtue, when Kakujo passed away, nuns from Hokke-ji Temple offered heart-shaped fans. This became the origin of the tradition. After the memorial service on the anniversary of his death, several hundred fans are scattered from the Shariden (relic hall).
