The Somei-yoshino cherry trees in Hirosaki Park's second enclosure were donated by former samurai Kikuchi Tatee in 1882 and are among the oldest surviving Somei-yoshino in Japan. Although Somei-yoshino were thought to live only 60-80 years, the park has over 400 specimens exceeding 100 years of age, with management techniques praised as the finest in Japan by many experts. The park has been selected as one of the '100 Best Cherry Blossom Viewing Spots in Japan'.
