The Takamoriyama area was a medieval mountain castle where Izawa Shogen Iekage, appointed as the Mutsu Province lieutenancy by Minamoto no Yoritomo after the destruction of the Oshu Fujiwara clan, resided. It was called 'Iwakiri Castle'. The castle ruins are now maintained as Takamoriyama Park, and from the 106-meter peak, you can see Sendai's city center and even the Pacific Ocean in the distance. In spring, more than 460 cherry trees including Somei Yoshino and higan cherry blossoms compete in beautiful bloom.
