A cold-weather cherry tree planted in the schoolyard of Mukaijima Elementary School. In 2018, it was certified as a new horticultural variety under the name 'Horai-zakura'. It is about 8.0m tall, with a trunk circumference of 2.55m at breast height and a root spread of about 4.4m. The flowers are light reddish-purple and bloom from early to mid-March, earlier than common Somei Yoshino and other cherry trees. Locally known as an early-blooming cherry, it is in full bloom every year around graduation ceremony time, sending off graduates. Be sure to see this cold-weather cherry, also designated as a Yamaguchi Prefecture natural monument.
