The festival began as the spring grand festival of Uesugi Shrine (dedicated to Uesugi Kenshin, the founding ancestor of the Yonezawa Uesugi clan) and Matsugasaki Shrine (dedicated to Uesugi Yozan, Uesugi Kagekatsu, and Naoe Kanetsugu). During the festival, the entire city is filled with festive spirit. The highlight is a reenactment of the Battle of Kawanakajima, said to be the greatest battle in the Sengoku period, where the Uesugi and Takeda armies clash on the Matsukawa riverbed. Visitors can also join the festival dressed in armor.
