A beautiful castle also known by the alias 'Higurashi Castle.' In 1637, 37,000 people of Shimabara and Amakusa, led by Amakusa Shiro Tokisada as commander-in-chief, holed up here in what became the famous 'Shimabara-Amakusa Rebellion.' Today, in the main keep stands a statue of Amakusa Shiro praying, created by the sculptor Nishime Kitamura from Minamishimabara City. In July 2018, it was registered as a World Cultural Heritage site under 'Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki and Amakusa Region.' Also a famous cherry blossom spot, you can enjoy hanami leisurely while feeling the sea breeze.
