A traditional festival held at Kirishima Jingu on the 4th day of the second lunar month, praying for a good harvest and family safety. The humorous farming play performed by people dressed as old women, sacred cows, and rice field gods is so amusing that you can't help laughing. On March 22, 1991, it was designated as an intangible folk cultural asset of Kagoshima Prefecture. Currently, the Otaue Festival is performed by the Hashimoto and Kodama families. The fact that specific families are designated to play the rice field god and other roles is said to be unrelated in other planting festivals.
