Fugenji Temple in Murozumi, Hikari City is said to have been founded in the Heian period when the monk Shokuu built a hall there, and has gathered devotion from across the country as the 'Bodhisattva of the Sea.' The 'Fugen Festival' held every May is a historic festival that began in the mid-Edo period to commemorate the anniversary of Shokuu's death. Along the roads around Fugenji Temple, traditional stalls selling garden plants, agricultural tools, pottery, and more line the streets, and throngs of worshippers fill the area day and night.
