Hiroshi Kagakui, known for the 'Daruma-san' series, debuted as an author at age 50 after working as a teacher at a special needs school. The insights gained from field experience led to picture book creation that brings smiles to all children. The first major retrospective after his sudden death is held to honor his exquisite works left in the brief 4 years before his sudden passing. In addition to original drawings and production materials, this exhibition traces his footsteps through valuable records from his teaching days, approaching the appeal of 'Kagakui-style' picture books still loved throughout Japan today.
